The Thousand Paper Cranes Project

I have my Differential Equations homework due Thursday and my Thermodynamics homework due tomorrow.  I also need to manage to finish developing the positive for my photogram for my Photography class sometime this week.  Therefore, I have concluded that it would be a good time to write up a blog entry on a site that hardly anyone reads.  I have scratched the idea of updating at the end of every week of the quarter because it just won't happen.  I will try to just simply update whenever I feel like it from now on.  Enjoy.

I guess the most exciting news that has happened is that I have been accepted into Seattle University's Civil Engineering program.  Seattle University is a lot more expensive than WSU and not as well known.  However, I was only granted general admission for WSU so far and have yet to get into a specific program.  I will find out more about the finances from Seattle University next week when they send me their financial aid information.  I have not heard
back from any other schools that I've applied to so far.

The classes that I am taking this quarter are Thermodynamics, Differential Equations, Photography, and Basketball.  The overall weekly schedule is actually pretty laid back as my actual class hours decrease day to day as I progress through the week.  All my classes should be fairly enjoyable.  I don't dislike any of the teachers and probably won't for this quarter since I haven't received any bad vibes from them.  Typically, my initial bad vibes are very, very accurate.  Surprisingly, there is also a much better guy:girl ratio in my classes (except basketball).  Unfortunately, the ratio has no effect on the classes regardless--it was just a simple observation.

I am glad that this is the last quarter before I get to transfer.  Honestly, the first two years of the "best four years of my life" have sucked.  As of today, the four best continuous years of my life have been third grade through sixth grade.  Maybe I just haven't tried hard enough to make these past two years more enjoyable, but there really hasn't been much to enjoy.  The most enjoyable part of my life this year has been the success the Blazers have had so far.

With not a whole lot going on with my life recently, I have decided to fold a thousand paper cranes before the end of the quarter.  This started over Spring break and is still going on.
I am somewhere at around 200+ cranes right now.  I lost count of the amount of cranes that I have folded a couple days ago, but I know that when I finish the pack of paper, I will be at 840 cranes.  As long as I average
about 100 cranes a week, I will get really close to reaching my goal.

There really isn't much of a reason as to why I'm folding these cranes or who I'm folding them for.  I was just bored one day and realized that I have been playing too much solitaire.  There's the Japanese legend that will grant one wish to those who fold a thousand paper cranes--kind of like collecting all seven Dragonballs.  If you don't really know much about the history behind the thousand paper cranes, I would encourage you to read up on it--it's actually quite interesting.  Probably one of the most famous stories revolving around cranes would be the story of Sadako Sasaki.

Do I believe in receiving a wish after completing the thousand cranes?  Not really.  Will I make a wish after completing a thousand cranes?  Sure, why not?  Afterall, I make a wish before I blow out my birthday candles.  I can say that folding the cranes is actually quite calming--at least it is for me.  I'm using fairly small paper to fold t
he cranes, so it requires a lot more concentration and precision.  This forces me to kind of get into a zone of folding paper cranes.  Surprisingly, my hands and fingers don't really get sore.  Unsurprisingly though, my neck does become quite sore after a while.  Another downfall is that a lot of time is 'wasted'.  I average about one crane in three minutes when I'm only concnetrated on folding cranes.  A thousand cranes will require 3000 minutes, which is 50 hours.  Fortunately for my case, I would have spent that time playing solitaire anyway, so it's not like I would have been any more productive.

Regardless, I highly recommend folding a thousand paper cranes just for the heck of it.  I'm pretty sure that they would make great gifts as long as you plan ahead.  If you find yourself in constant high stress, try folding cranes to calm yourself down.  Solitaire addic
tion?  Folding cranes can help.

I have tried to come up with things to write about.  Among other things photography was a subject that I have attempted to write about.  However, I didn't feel like I could really write anything about it because I have never really taken any classes about it and would not really have anything to talk about.  Now that I'm taking a photography class this quarter, I would hope to start writing about photography stuff once in a while.  This may come a bit easier since I could probably write a lot about my photography teacher.  He looks like a skinnier Dr. Phil and sounds like a higher pitched Dr. Phil.  I actually didn't make the connection until about 45 seconds ago.  He also spits out some questionable statements, including that nature does not have/follow any patterns.  I guess he doesn't count the Golden Ratio and Fibonacci's sequence as patterns.

Winter Quarter: Week...1, 2 skip a few...10!

Winter quarter is officially over.  I am happy that it is over because the last couple of weeks have been quite stressful.  Spring quarter should be smooth sailing and I'll hopefully be able to transfer somewhere.

I have been accepted into WSU, which is a very big relief.  I'm not too excited about it since it's not really where I want to go, but I most certainly would not mind going there at all.  It is not on the bottom of my list, so I will probably find myself happy if I do end up going there.  I have yet to hear back from anywhere else--which is both good and bad depending on what it is I hear from them.

Next quarter I plan on taking differential equations, thermodynamics, photography, and basketball.  Differential equations and thermodynamics will definitely be the two most challenging classes, but I think I will enjoy them--which in turn would make me much more motivated throughout the quarter.  Photography will hopefully allow me to grasp some fundamentals so that I can expand upon with my hobby of taking photos.  Sometimes people tell me that I take good photographs and ask me for advice.  However, I really don't know any advice that I can give them besides to just shoot and adjust since I don't even know what I'm doing.  Basketball is to just keep me active throughout the quarter.
